Affordable Housing
The town’s ambitious affordable housing program is designed to fulfill a variety of needs. One size does not fit all. Throughout East Hampton, the town owns individual lots and parcels designated for affordable housing. Applicants for housing must be eligible for a mortgage or a conventional loan; winners are chosen by lottery from a list maintained by the office of Housing and Community Development.
Winners are given a 99-year lease for their lots – on which they choose a house of their choice. The town maintains a 100 percent recapture fee on the land to keep the properties affordable in the affordable housing pool.
Twenty-six houses are planned for the Green Hollow project, and the town is creating 26 rental apartments on Springs Fireplace Road. Affordable apartments are now allowed within commercial buildings, and a recent public hearing was held on affordable accessory apartments attached to existing buildings – 100 in all, 20 per school district.
The Housing and Community Development Department will manage all these programs. Public and private entities working together to construct affordable living quarters is encouraged.
